Windows 11 File Explorer

Intro to File Explorer in Windows 11: Navigation pane, main pane, Toolbar with useful buttons, Address bar showing file path, Search box. To change how folders and files appear click on the View button and choose between e.g. Icons, Lists or Details and at the bottom of View – click ‘Show’ to change the layout of File Explorer

Organise in Windows 11: 1. Create new folder. Click ‘New’ ❯ Folder. 2. Rename a file or folder. Click twice slowly over the item then type the name. 3. Delete a file or folder. Select the item then press ‘Delete’ or click on the bin button in the toolbar

Search for a file in Windows 11: Select the folder to search in (e.g. ‘Home’ for all items on the PC), then click in the Search box and type

Sort files using columns in Details view: View as Details then arrange files by Name/Status/Date modified/Type column headings by clicking on the column header. The first click will sort in one direction and a second click the opposite e.g. A-Z then Z-A

Move files with cut and paste: select item/s, click on the scissor ‘Cut’ button in the toolbar, open the folder you want to move the item/s to, then click the ‘Paste’ button

Move files with drag and drop: Select the item/s, hover over one then hold down the left click on the mouse, drag over to the chosen folder until it is selected and release the mouse

Copy files with copy and paste: select item/s, click on the ‘Copy’ button, select the folder where you want to copy the item/s to then click the clipboard ‘Paste’ button
