Safari browser (desktop application)

How Safari works with an Apple ID: When Safari is selected in iCloud to be synced, Safari settings and any passwords used to sign into website accounts are saved to iCloud. See “Sync Safari” below

Safari basic use: Toolbar at top. Get to know buttons: Sidebar icon (click to show, click to hide), Page back (click to go back, hold to see history), Page forward (click to go forward, hold to see history) and Refresh circular arrow (to request the webpage is re-sent from the server). Then the address bar (where the website address is entered) with the view site information padlock and useful Share icon. The Bookmarks bar is below (when thisis set)

Make Safari your own: Safari ❯ Settings choose an option in ‘General’ for ‘Homepage’ and ‘New windows open with’. Set the Start Page options and move position by dragging up or down.

Safari advanced use: Safari ❯ Settings view options in ‘Tabs’, ‘Autofill’ (turn on) and ‘Passwords’ (Keychain)

Bookmarks: Add new bookmark and/or organise with Safari ❯ Bookmarks ❯ Edit Bookmarks

Passwords: Store and retrieve safely in Safari ❯ Settings (or Preferences) click ‘Passwords’. Tip! check sync is on in System Settings ❯ iCloud ❯ sync Keychain

Print from Safari: Go to File ❯ Print, choose Safari then set the webpage printing options (click ‘Show Details’ if option menu is not showing)

Safari extensions: To add one go to Safari ❯ Safari Extensions – the App store opens to the Safari Extensions page. Search then click ‘Get’. To turn on and off open Safari ❯ Settings (or Preferences) click Extensions, tick the box next to the extension’s name.

Sync Safari: To tell iCloud to sync Safari on your MacOS Sonoma choose Apple menu ❯ System Settings, click [your name] at the top of the sidebar, click iCloud on the right, then turn on Safari. For MacOS 12 or earlier: choose Apple menu ❯ System Preferences, click Apple ID, click iCloud, then select Safari

Privacy in Safari: Clear cookies Safari ❯ Settings ❯ Privacy ❯ Manage Website Data ❯ Select one or more websites and click Remove All (Removing the data may reduce tracking, but may also log you out of websites)
